6 Ways to Price Your Membership
Nov 04, 2024Starting and pricing a membership is no small feat. Trust me, I’ve been there—nervous about picking the “right” price and wondering if anyone would join. Spoiler alert: they did, and now my membership is a six-figure business that started on a shoestring budget. 🎉
Whether you’re just beginning your membership journey or looking to refine your pricing, I’m here to help you with six effective pricing strategies that can make a real difference. Oh, and if you’re more of a visual learner, I’ve included a video with all the details, plus a free download to guide you through the process. Let’s dive in!
1. Tiered Pricing: Flexibility Meets Complexity
Tiered pricing offers something for everyone—basic, premium, VIP, you name it. However, it’s worth noting that managing multiple levels can get tricky. Personally, I stick to one standard level in my membership. Why? Simplicity. Members get the same great content, and I avoid the extra admin hassle.
If you choose this route, start small—maybe two tiers—and add more later if needed. This will keep the project manageable while offering options to suit different budgets.
2. Introductory Pricing: Start Small, Build Big
When I launched, I offered a ridiculously low founding member price—just £1.99 per month. It was terrifying (and slightly bonkers), but it gave me a quick win: a small budget to get started. Looking back, I’d set my initial price a bit higher, but the low price built trust and allowed me to grow steadily.
Here’s the key: Be upfront about future price increases. Founding members will appreciate their grandfather rights, and this transparency sets expectations as your membership value grows.
3. Value-Based Pricing: What’s Your Solution Worth?
Value-based pricing means understanding what your membership is truly worth to your audience. For example, in the Ladies Working Dog Group, members pay £19.50 monthly—a steal compared to a £45 private training session.
Think about what you’re offering—expertise, community, time savings—and price it accordingly. If you go too low, people might assume it’s not valuable. Too high, and you risk pricing yourself out of the market. Find the sweet spot that aligns with the value you bring.
4. Competitor Analysis: Know Your Niche
Research similar memberships in your niche to gauge their pricing. Are they charging more or less than you’re considering? Use this as a benchmark, but don’t get too hung up on it. Your unique spin on things is what makes your membership stand out.
A quick tip: Starting low and increasing as you grow is easier than lowering a high price if things don’t go as planned.
5. Psychological Pricing: The Magic of £29.99
Pricing isn’t just numbers; it’s psychology. Weirdly enough, £29.99 feels more affordable than £30, even though the difference is just a penny. But use this tactic carefully—always be transparent to maintain trust.
Another trick? Offer multiple payment frequencies, like monthly or annual plans. Annual memberships often attract those who know and love your content, while monthly payments appeal to those testing the waters.
6. Payment Frequency: Flexibility for Your Members
Speaking of payments, offering options like trials, monthly, or annual plans can make your membership accessible to more people. Trials (think £1 for 7 days) are a fantastic way to let potential members experience the value before committing.
Annual memberships, on the other hand, are great for providing discounts while locking in longer-term members.
